Shop smarter to fly cheaper

Cheap summertime airfare is typically hard to find, especially this late in the year. But deal hunters have reason to keep clicking and scrolling through Internet travel sites and airline Web pages.

Fares are running about 15 percent lower than last year nationwide and about 8 percent lower out of Orlando.

"It's very unusual for summertime for these sales to occur," said Rick Seaney, chief executive officer of FareCompare.com, a Web site that tracks airline ticket prices.

A softening demand and less consumer tolerance for fare increases after at least seven price spikes last year are contributing to better deals in the months ahead.

"This summer's probably a bargain compared to last time, but fares are still at historic highs," said Darryl Jenkins, an aviation professor at Ohio State University.
